In response to the recent turmoil in Hong Kong, 10 subsidized and private universities initially kept a low profile. After the impact on the Legislative Council building this month, senior university officials voiced their voices and appealed for rational communication.
Hong Kong Mingbao News Network said on September 9 that all 10 universities appealed for rational communication among all parties to solve the current social dilemma or deep-seated contradictions. Among them, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology President Shi Wei expressed his approval and condemnation of violence, but many demonstrators still took action knowing the consequences and should discuss the underlying causes in order to deal with the current problems. Teng Jinguang, president of Polytechnic University, was saddened by the July 1st shock on the Legislative Council. He hoped that all parties would establish a calm, rational and peaceful constructive dialogue to resolve the current contradictions. He Shunwen, president of Hang Seng University, said that persistent confrontation or violence could not resolve the impasse. He urged students to cherish life, pay attention to safety and respect the spirit of the rule of law. In addition, Duan Chongzhi, president of the Chinese University, believes that the ongoing confrontation will widen the current social rift to the point where it is difficult to repair. All parties must find a way out in an open and honest manner. Qian Dakang, president of Baptist University, also appealed to all circles to reflect on why society went to extremes and was hostile to each other.

Some principals have made clear their opposition to violence. Zheng Guohan, president of Lingnan University, said that such violence could not be tolerated. He hoped that all parties would put aside their prejudices and rebuild a rational communication bridge. Yang Zhigang, associate vice president of Baptist University, wrote in a newspaper recently that the demonstrators surrounded the police headquarters "to create the impression that the government is in danger", and their so-called "non-cooperative movement" was "enough to cause the government to declare a state of emergency and mobilize the army to maintain order". In addition, the President of the University of Hong Kong, Zhang Xiang, was born in the Mainland, and his attitude attracted particular attention in Hong Kong society. "I am deeply saddened by the recent violence in the Legislative Council Building, and the destructive actions should be condemned," Zhang said in a statement. He said that in Hong Kong's current predicament, "I am convinced that different opinions can coexist in a civilized and rational manner. As long as all parties can actively engage in dialogue, social rifts will always be compounded. I believe that all sectors of the world are willing to seek common ground while reserving differences for a better Hong Kong."
In response, some Hong Kong university students asked Zhang Xiang to withdraw his comments. At the same time, some netizens left messages in support of the principal saying that opponents believed that any means of assaulting the police, the Legislative Council and the government were necessary force. They spoke for democracy without giving others the opportunity to express their opinions.
